How To Apply For A Full UK Driving License
There are a number of requirements that need to be fulfilled in order to apply for a full UK driving license to the DVLA (Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency):
A Provisional License
You will need to apply for a provisional driving license in order to apply to take the theory and practical tests necessary to obtain a full UK driving license. You can book your theory test as soon as you receive your provisional driving license number and don't need to wait to receive a photo ID card.
You will need to take and pass a driver's theory test before you can take the practical driving test. To book an appointment for the theory test you will need to:
- Provide proof of residence in Great Britain for a period of 3 years.
- Be at least 15 years and 9 months of age.
- Pass an eye test.
- Provide an identity document, UK passport, and National Insurance number.
- Pay a fee of £23.
You will need to pass two theoretical sections - the touch screen question and answer portion and the hazard perception test. If you do not pass the test, you will be required to wait a minimum period of 3 working days before taking the test again and be required to pay the full fee of £23 each time you take the test.
The Practical Test
You will need to pay a fee of £62 (£75 on evenings - 4.30pm onwards, weekends and bank holidays) when you book your practical test. The practical test lasts about 40 minutes where you will be required to answer specific questions regarding your vehicle and vehicle safety. You will then need to prove that you have the ability to control the vehicle adequately while driving independently.
If you fail the practical test, you can take it again after a period of 10 days but you will need to repay the full test fee. However, you will need to retake the test within 2 years or you will need to redo your theory exam.
Application For A Full UK License
If you pride yourself on your driving record and being a really safe driver, you may benefit greatly from the black box insurance premiums. Some insurance companies review your account every three months and if you are driving carefully, you can get a discount on top of your low monthly premiums.
Alternatively, you can apply directly to the DLVA for your full license. You need to make this application within a 2 year period to avoid having to retake both the theory and practical tests. It is advisable to rather allow your practical test examiner to submit the paperwork on your behalf immediately to speed up the process and ensure that the license is issued automatically. The license will be sent to the address that you have provided.
Once you have passed the test and received your full driving license, you are legally permitted to drive a vehicle independently within Great Britain.
