About this deal

Tales of fantasy fiction – like their heroes – can be too elevated and grand, or too dark and destructive to make for an easy match with comedy. Aside from the barbed witticisms between rival characters, it is rare to find a book built upon a spine of humour and satire. The great Terry Pratchett managed it magnificently, but the Discworld series aside, I’ve only really read two books that strove for laughs in a fantastic setting. The first was The Outsourcerer’s Apprentice, which – to my mind – worked over-hard to manufacture punning comedy from its real-world allusions yet still fell short of an underlying story that would bear the weight of a reader’s expectations. The second was Nicholas Eames’ Kings of The Wyld, which I found massively enjoyable as it somehow combined the plots of “The Magnificent Seven” with “This is Spinal Tap” into an epic quest that was – like its heroes – not without flaws, but fun nonetheless.

Foe-Tossing Charge: Johan single-handedly carves a path through the Cavalry of the Dead to get to Detarr Ur'Mayan in the second book. Detarr notes how predictable Johan is.I’m a big fan of lighter weight games, especially ones that come in between the 30 and 60 minute mark. There’s just enough time to work up a strategy and get good at the game, without feeling like Orconomics is overstaying its welcome. In the second book, Tib'rin's role is taken by a Kobold named Burt. Unlike Tib'rin, Burt is worldly and speaks both Imperial and Shadowtongue. He also has connections everywhere, frequently through other Kobolds. See his picture here ◊.

Doug Tisdale Jr. really plays this one like he was holding all the aces. He is just excellent, and I have to say he has some pretty darn good comedic timing and knows how to tell funny. He could have seriously dropped the ball, and not told it with that wink in his eye like he does. He can narrate. There is no question of that here. Even though I did receive a promo code for this review it in no way influenced my considerations of the material, and in fact, inspired me to be more honest. In fact, getting a code generally makes me harsher as a reviewer as I am more often concerned what someone like Me will decide based on my review. Mordo Ogg gives no special treatment for anyone (hence his shortage of clerics) and everybody gets one visit from the god of Death. But Gorm’s tarnished circumstances may be hiding a golden opportunity. If he and his half-baked party can overcome deep conspiracies and dark magics, he just might redeem himself and his career enough to be a professional hero once more.Professor Guinea Pig: Gremlins are extremely good at biomancy and they tend to use it, first and foremost, on themselves. This is why no Gremlin looks quite like another, and they tend to like it that way. The

During a conversation between Kaitha and Gorm about the dangers of heroes doing stupid things for glory, Gorm recalls a story about a well-known and highly-skilled group of heroes that were killed to a man when an inexperienced member of the crew charged into a drake roost and angered all the Acid Drakes inside. It’s worth pointing out that if there are already startups in the space your startup could go, you’re able to leapfrog them, potentially all the way. Paying close attention to other player’s startups can net you easy points. Use an Industry AbilityFans of Terry Pratchett and Nicholas Eames are likely to enjoy this novel. It has a lot of similarities to their work. All-in-all, Orconomics is a highly entertaining, easy read that I’d heartily recommend for anyone looking for a lighthearted escape from the grind. It’s easy to see why this book won the SPFBO top slot.

Fantasy Counterpart Culture: There's some indication that the nation of Ruskan is a fantasy stand-in for Russia, given that it's located to the east of the Freedlands, and a key Ruskan character is a werebear, who speaks in a characteristic Russian manner (e.g. dropping articles, saying phrases like "is good idea"). Other Ruskan characters don't speak the same way, possibly implying a regional dialect. There's also the Ruskan name for Wood Gnomes - "Domovoy" (supposedly means "rat men"). In Russian tradition, Domovoy are household gods/spirits.

My Skull Runneth Over: A recurring problem for elves, as they inevitably end up forgetting little things, one after another, until they're for all intents and purposes a different elf than they were a hundred years ago, let alone five hundred. Empathic Weapon: The Wyrmwood staff is rather choosy about who wields it, while Benny Hookhand goes so far as to possess his wielders. Gorm expresses the opinion that sentient weaponry was a bad idea multiple times.
